OVERVIEW The Buddha and the barcode is a short (85-page) introduction to contemporary Buddhism. Beautifully designed by artist Bernadette Acht, its chapters cover the basics of Buddhism, its rise in popularity in the west, Buddhism and the modern world, the benefits of Buddhist practice and Buddhism as a media phenomenon. Rather than trying to convert readers or give an academic account, the book focusses on what ordinary people across the world do with Buddhism in their own lives.
Laurence Cox first encountered Buddhist meditation in 1992 and has over a dozen years’ experience as meditation teacher, group organiser and retreat leader. As an academic he is writing the history of Buddhism and Ireland and (with Alicia Turner and Brian Bocking) researching the strange life of U Dhammaloka, an Irish-born migrant worker who became a leading figure in the anti-colonial Buddhist revival in early twentieth-century Burma.
This book was intended for publication as a benefit for the Dublin Buddhist Centre but fell victim to the economic recession. It is offered here "for the benefit of all beings".
