OVERVIEW

Is it a good time to reduce the sulphur emissions from shipping?

The book has a look on the scientists’ efforts to quantify the cooling impact of the ships’ present sulphur emissions, and explains why the withdrawal of the ships’ particle parasol might - in the present situation - be more destructive than what has this far been acknowledged. The authors take a look at what is now happening at the Arctic Ocean, and why the heating of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean could be the most serious part of our whole planetary overheating problem.

The authors briefly discuss the likely impacts of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) treaty on public health, on the acidification of the oceans, and on the shipping sector’s greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, they present a number of alternative policy options, and discuss their merits and complexities.
